There are lots of things you can do to help stop climate change…
…Becoming a Climate Champion is just one of them
Welcome to the NTEU’s new campaign website, Sustainable Campus.
This website is the home of the NTEU Climate Champion campaign. From here, NTEU members will be able to sign up to become a Climate Champion, as well as access campaign resources.
The NTEU is running this campaign because as a union, we recognise that climate change is real and will have a devastating impact on Australia and the world.
We know that the people who work at Australia’s TAFEs and universities have a vital role in helping to mitigate the effects of dangerous climate change, and help us adapt to unavoidable change.
The NTEU Climate Champions campaign will enable NTEU members to take positive action in their workplace, in their tertiary education institution, and in their community.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do Climate Champions do?
Each month, every Climate Champion will receive an Action Kit, with an activity for your workplace, your home and your community. These activities are aimed at increasing and encouraging sustainable behaviour.
By signing up to become a Climate Champion, you are committing to take action to improve the sustainability of your campus.
Climate Champions will also be able to participate in their NTEU Environment Committee. These Committees and their members will be responsible for developing and campaigning for institution-wide improvements to sustainable practices. Each NTEU Environment Committee will be encouraged to take a whole-of-institution approach. Your experience and expertise is essential to seeing real improvements to sustainability at our tertiary institutions.
Which universities is the Climate Champion campaign being run at?
The Climate Champions campaign is being run at Deakin University, Monash University, and the University of Melbourne.
The campaign will be expanded to all universities and TAFEs in Victoria in 2010.
If you are interested in helping establish an NTEU Environment Committee at your university, please sign up, and let us know in the “comments” field.
Why are you running this campaign?
The NTEU has long supported action on climate change. Recently, the NTEU Victorian Division conducted a survey with over 2000 respondents, to gauge perceptions of our members towards environmental issues such as climate change.
The survey showed that over 97 percent of respondents were concerned or very concerned about environmental issues, and that over 75 percent of members thought that the environmental was a “core union issue”.
This Climate Champions campaign is in addition to our other activities, such as collective bargaining, providing industrial and workplace support, OHS and so on.
How do I become involved in the campaign?
